I read a lot of RSS. I’m currently subscribed to 132 feeds and in the last 30 days I’ve read 2,643 items. For well over a year I used Google Reader but after hearing lots about desktop readers and reading this by Shawn Blanc, I decided to give NetNewsWire ago. I really really wanted it to work for me. I put up with it for a while thinking I was just too used to Google Reader. But after a month or so, I’ve gone back to Google.
Here’s a list of NNW positives and negatives:
+ This theme by Antonio Carusone (AisleOne) made the posts look amazing.
- I didn’t like reading posts by author as apposed to time blogged.
- Just another program using RAM.
- It took ages to refresh new posts.
- Not having the Trends feature that Google Reader has.
- The fact I couldn’t read the feeds anywhere (i.e. my phone, at uni, etc.)
- The ugly icon.
- It wasn’t easy to flag/star an interesting item.
Iain Tait just blogged about this so no doubt his ad company Poke did it. It’s pretty amazing. Works really well. Would be pretty awesome to win glastonbury tickets. I really love the way this allows you to interact with an actual cow in a field!
A Swedish artist named Erik Nordenankar has drawn a self portrait of himself by flying a briefcase containing a GPS unit around the world… Pretty cool. Though it must be also be the largest carbon footprint drawing in the world too. (via Infovore)
On May 21st, Muxtape experienced an error that caused every song in the database to be overwritten with the wrong artist & title. I initially reported this as a malicious act, but after taking the site down and investigating further it was clear that it was a fault of the software, for which I am wholly responsible. The last available complete backup of the songs database was three weeks old; so while the site is now repaired and back online, most songs uploaded in the last three weeks have disappeared.
I’m truly sorry for this massive inconvenience. Data integrity is something I take seriously, and to prevent this from happening again we’ve started creating complete backups of the database twice a day. In addition, Muxtape will soon be joined by two more developers (as opposed to one developer who’s constantly distracted by everything else it takes to start and run a business/web site).
Thanks for your patience and understanding through this, and please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Today is the first day of my summer. I finished exams yesterday. I don’t start uni again ‘til October.
So this summer I intend to do a lot of things; to mark the beginning of it all I’ve started this tumblr. This will become my blogging platform. Up until now I used the one that I have built into my site [powered by blogger] but my site’s gonna get a redesign this summer and i think the blog will not feature in the next version.
